Quantitative Experimental Analysis of Transparency and Stability in Haptic Interfaces

چکیده
The notion of haptic transparency is used to quantify the delity with which virtual object properties are presented to, and perceived by, the human operator. Experimental results are presented quantifying the ability of humans to detect diierences in mechanical impedances representing typical types of impedance corruption (loss of transparency) encountered in haptic interfaces due to stability-enhancing dynamic compensation. In particular, a poor connection is found between the stiiness of virtual walls and their perceptual \hardness", prompting a new deenition of hardness which is often dominated by the high frequency dynamics of the rendered impedance.

Performance of Mobile Haptic Interface
One of most interesting aspects in haptic research deals with the extension of application workspace, thus allowing haptic simulation within large virtual environments. Several devices have been realized that allow this kind of interaction, in particular our interest focuses on mobile haptic interfaces, realized by combining classic grounded haptic devices with mobile platforms. While grounded ...
متن کاملStability Boundary and Transparency for Haptic Rendering
Over the past years haptic interfaces have been successfully integrated into a wide range of fields such as engineering (Borro et al., 2004) or surgery (Basdogan et al., 2004). Haptic devices allow users to interact with a certain environment, either remote or virtual, by the sense of touch. In these applications—unlike in conventional robotic systems—the user shares workspace with the device. ...
متن کاملExperimental stability analysis of a haptic system
An elementary prerequisite for haptic applications is to preserve stability. Numerous studies have been presented in the past dealing with ensuring stability for haptic interfaces. The passivity condition of Colgate et al. (1994; 1997) represents one of the most cited theoretical studies towards a common stability condition. Although ensuring passivity of haptic devices is a general approach, i...
متن کاملForce Control Law Design for a Five Degree-of-freedom Haptic Mechanism
In this paper the effect of a force control law in the transparency of a five degree-of-freedom (dof) haptic mechanism is investigated. The mechanism, which is a part of a training medical simulator for urological operations, consists of a two-dof, five bar linkage and a three-dof spherical joint. The force control algorithm is described and discussed. The open and closed loop schemes are compa...

Impedance-type haptic devices are being developed for applications requiring high output forces and large workspaces. The natural dynamics of such haptic interfaces can be significant enough to interfere with the user’s perception of the virtual environment both in free motion and in contact. In such cases, the haptic control algorithm must be able to reduce /alter the apparent dynamics of the ...
